Also, Ive started watching a new series called Hakouki Shinsengumi Kitan, about a girl who gets mixed up in the affairs of the Shinsengumi. I really like it so far. The animation is detailed and pretty and the men are all beautiful. I think its going to end up as kind of a reverse harem thing where they all fall in love with her.

But the point of this is, I actually discovered the series by looking at some gorgeous fanart from the official artbook. This isn't the first time this has happened for me; I was drawn into Princess Tutu because of an epic fanvideo. Has anyone else ever had something from fandom turn them on to a series they'd never heard of before?

I don't have an exact experience but I got back into FMA this year after stumbling upon some lovely fanart. I'd dabbled in the series a few years ago but didn't really click with it but I decided to watch the newer anime series, Brotherhood, after seeing this fanart and it really took off with me.

FMA original anime was crap. Brotherhood follows the manga to the letter and is SO much better.

Yes, they are 8D. I know, right? It took me weeks to find a pair that were flat and leather and not uber-expensive. What is it with ladies shoes and all having to have some freakish heel on them?

I totally agree. I watched Brotherhood wondering why I hadn't liked the series much before (other than what happened to Hughes. I still bawled my eyes out despite knowing it was going to happen.)

hell yeah, Princess Tutu! i saw an AMV of that on youtube, then i started clicking on the actual episodes and suddenly, I saw the whole series and almost cried at the ending. Damn Youtube, the sneaky bastard. I saw a lot of fanart that turned me towards anime... Durarara~ I saw cosplay for Celty, and they digitally removed the person's head to add smoke. I was like... whaaaa? So I started watching the anime and completely fell in love with the story. One of my latest favorites now. I also saw artwork for a korean manga called My Heart is Beating. THE COLOR PALETTE, OMG. i eventually corrupted moldycookies and catssyclaws too. there's only seven chapters so far and all we can say is... "such pretty COLORS."

ive never heard of that Korean manga but I fangirl hard over Vagabond for the same reason - amazing lineart and color. the mangaka uses watercolor instead of copics. :D

wait. a manga with watercolor? that sounds pretty sweet~ def gonna check it out. but you should definitely check out the art of My Heart is Beating. even if you don't like the story, at least check out the art. so lovely~

I've seen a few AMVs that inspired me to watch certain anime. Fruits Basket and Zetsubou Sensei were probably the biggest two. And Hakuouki is definitely something pretty to watch. Mmm, Hijikata...

Pretty much. Story-wise, it actually holds pretty close to the history of the Shinsengumi. Of course, minus the random demons and a single girl 'servicing' the entirety of the senior staff. I'm a big fan of the reverse harem, so this one was right up my alley.

Im pretty familiar with the Shinsengumi, both in actual history and in series like Rurouni Kenshin and live action films. Its interesting to see this version of them and all bishi-fied. XD

He's so yummy. I think (for me at least) he's more attractive than most Japanese bishie actors because he's a little more masculine. He doesn't wear lip gloss and that sort of thing - he looks like a real dude, not a live-action version of a manga character.

completely agree. ikuta toma is one of the only japanese actors that i could really go for. not even oguri shun is that great in my opinion. but matsujun is totally one of those more "feminine" japanese actors, and i just don't see the appeal there.... i think ikuta toma's acting skills are really amazing, too. his character in hana kimi to all the suspense/detective shows he did recently shows a lot of range. oguri shun, on the other hand.... does the same exact thing in all his shows.

That too. He's actually a good actor, which as you said is kind of a rarity in Japanese tv, and even asian cinema in general. It might have something to do with the acceptable range of displayable emotion in their culture. You just don't see them really diving in and getting ugly emotion-wise.

Yes, a really hot picture of Kakashi before I knew who he was and before I knew all that fandom produces; and listening to the music from Nana before I knew what that was as well (The Rose I think? I wanted more, more more of that wonderful music).

The music from Nana is so good, and I don't even like Jpop/Jrock. Its a total anomaly, and even more so because its a fake band created for the show. I love the song Black Tears, and most of the music from Trapnest.

I actually got into BSG because of a secret someone posted on fandomsecrets about the awesome that is Kara Thrace. I know I'd heard something about the show before that but at the time I saw the secret I was really in the mood for scifi and then I happened to ask a friend if she'd seen BSG and she ended up having all the DVDs.

I know! Ive been looking for badass boots like that without a heel for so long. They are really warm too, the faux sheep fur goes all the way to the toe. If you've ever worn real leather boots in cold weather you know how important that is - no frozen pinky toe!

I finished it and really liked it. Its definitely not as haremy as I thought it would be (its based on a video game and I think thats where it happens) but its still really good. If you like "historical" animes like Rurouni Kenshin or Champloo you will enjoy it.

OMG, Rurouni Kenshin was totally my first anime/OVA love (right after Inuyasha, which was totally my gateway drug anime).

My boyfriend and I keep trying to find time to watch The Seven Samurai together; this def goes on the list as soon as I can find it afterward!

Inuyasha was my gateway too. I started watching it on cartoon network, then when I learned there were more episodes beyond what they were playing I got a hold of them in Japanese and it was all over from there. XD
