Tatiana and Alexander from The Bronze Horseman. A young Russian woman and a Red Army officer who fall in love during the horrendous siege of Leningrad in WWII. Love amid tragedy, particularly war, is one of my bulletproof kinds, and this is my favorite love story ever. I'm re-reading it right now. For those who loved Atonement but thought it was too sad, I definitely recommend this story.

Ooooh sounds really good!! How accessible is the prose?

And if you've read/seen Doctor Zhivago, how does it rate against that? (I've only seen the movie myself.)

It's actually been compared to Dr. Zhivago, but I haven't read the book and only seen part of the movie. From what I did see, its in the same vein for sure, regarding the struggle people went through under Stalinist Communism. The prose is very easy to digest but at the same time has moments of beautiful poetry. I really like Paullina Simons' style.

If you're going to read it make sure you get the whole trilogy, otherwise you'll be ready to kill yourself at the apparent tragic ending of the first book.
