So Say We All
Sep. 10th, 2009 06:13 pmI just got the entire Battlestar Galactica series, and stayed up way too late last night watching a good chunk of the first season.
...WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO WATCH THIS???
This is one of the best series on television. Seriously. The writing is excellent. The characters are complex and likeable. Their relationships are hella complex. I like sci-fi, but wouldnt consider myself a huge sci-fi nut, and Im not into it for the Ooh space! or Zomg killer robots!. The story is very much about humanity, about what it means to be human and how we cope with hardship and sustain hope through dark times. I love the way its filmed - a lot of close up shots and focus on emotions and reactions and what a person can say without saying anything.
And let me mention one other thing. Without overtly trying to be, this show is one of the most progressive in years. Granted, Ive only watched about 10 episodes, but right from the start we have several strong women, from Starbuck, the cigar smoking ace who's not afraid to call people on their bullshit no matter who they are, to the secretary of education who suddenly finds herself President due to chain of command, and does a damn good job of it despite peoples doubts. One thing you always see in shows that try to be gender progressive but fall short, is one or two female leads...and no other women around anywhere. In BSG, there are female crewmembers everywhere you look in the background, up to the Master at Arms being mentioned as female. We never see her on screen and theres no reason to make her female. But they did.
In fact, theres no discrimination of any kind. A persons ethnicity or gender doesnt factor into their position in life in either positive or negative ways. Its a true nonissue, the way it should be.
I could go on, but really I think I just want to go watch more episodes. I know a lot of my F-list consider gender/race issues in movies/tv/books etc, and so I seriously recommend this show to all of you. Even if you dont like sci-fi, because this show isnt really even focused on the science fiction aspects. Watch it. You'll thank me. XD

Date: 2009-09-12 04:03 pm (UTC)Have you ever watched any of Joss Whedons stuff? Buffy and Firefly and Dr Horrible and what not? He's pretty progressive too, i love it. You don't find that 'lead female somehow gets in trouble and man rushes into save her'. It's more like 'female gets into trouble, man rushes into save her but she deals with it before he even gets there' haha.

Date: 2009-09-15 12:50 pm (UTC)I'm a huge fan and Starbucks is one my favorite characters. I also love Baltar's Internal-six. (It might because she's drop dead sexy) There are other characters, like Gauis, Tyrol and Anders who I adore also. :3
I hope you don't mind me friending you because I want to hear what you think about the end of the series when you get there. :3
