1. Which is your favorite fic?

Thats hard to say, because I love them all for different reasons. Perception carries an important  message, Silver Lining was the most self-indulgent, Vertigo I believe has the best plot (so far,) Vespertine is the best-written (so far) I think I would have to say my favorite fic hasn't been written yet. I've been waiting until I could do it justice, both skillwise and plotwise. I feel confident that I can now, and it's coming very soon. ; )

2. Which is your best-received fic?

That's also tough. Vespertine has the highest ratio of reviews per chapter, but Perception is the one everyone talks about when Cynchick is mentioned. I think it's the relevant message in the story that sticks with people, which is why I wanted to write it in the first place, so I'm really happy about that.

3. Which is your worst-received fic?

Lol. None of them are badly recieved, but Broken Bridges has gotten the least attention. I know that's because 1) the main character is secondary in the manga, 2) the ship for that pairing is really small, 3) the plot revolves around events that happened so long ago they're irrelevant now, and 4) it was published before anyone knew who I was. It also might have something to do with the fact that I grew tired and uninspired with it after only a few chapters. Perception demanded to be written instead.

4. Which is your angsty-est fic?

Ooooh. They pretty much all have angst in them, because I'm an angst whore. It's a tie between Perception because one half of the pairing dies, and Silver Lining because nearly everybody but the pairing dies. Lol.

5. Which is your funniest fic?

I like to have some comic relief in my stories, but I don't really focus on it, so I'm not really sure. Christmas Confessions is the most lighthearted and cracky, so I guess it would be that one.

6. Smuttiest?

Silver Lining, hands down. I said that was my most self-indulgent fic. As in, "I want these two to hook up and make sweet, sweet lovins, so now they're gonna. Plot no jutsu." XD The switch from ItaSaku to DeiSaku is a major one, and I was riding high on the freedom of that pairing to display open affection and have uninhibited, un-angsty sex. Lots of it. In just about every possible position and location. What can I say? DeiSaku is hawt.

7. Fluffiest?

That's a toss-up between Christmas Confessions and Once More, With Feeling. Both of them are just pure WAFF. I love angst, yes, but sometimes I just want to people to fall for each other and have a happy ending.

8. Have you ever made someone cry with a fic?

Oh man. I hear it all the time. It's because my fics have a lot of angst in them, but also have a lot of fluffy bits and sweetness, and the rollercoaster-like combination makes people bawl. I've made myself cry while writing too. Most notably, chapter 17 of Perception and chapter 1 of Silver Lining. Especially SL, that was torture. While writing I have to imagine every little detail, repeatedly, so I often end up getting caught up in the emotions of the scene like an actor would.

9. Which fic frustrates you the most?

Perception, because it's the one that needs the most work. when I read back over parts of it now it's kinda difficult to get through because it's so unrefined and amateur and "fanfic-ish" compared to what I write now. Especially the lemons. Gawd. They honestly embarrass me to read. I plan to revise and edit it again once I have some time.

10. Which fic was the most fun to write?

Christmas Confessions, because its warm, lighthearted, humorous, sexy, and just flowed really naturally. And its my OTP.

11. Who is your favorite OC you've ever created?

That would be Kaya, Deidara and Sakura's daughter from the end of Silver Lining. She's precocious and adorable and the perfect mix of both her parents. I also love her because she is the physical representation of the fic's happy ending.

12. Are you better at oneshot or mulitpart?

I enjoy writing multipart fics more, because I have time to develop relationships and make the reader care about the characters and the story itself. There is more freedom in oneshots because you don't have to justify everything, the reader accepts the situation as is. But at the same time there is very little room to fit an engaging, memorable story into. I think my preference will always be for longer fics, both to read and to write.

13. What character do you think you're the best at portraying?

I write Sakura's pov most, because I identify with her in many ways, and as a female, its easier to write a female's perspective. But I personally think (and I've been told this by others as well) that I write Deidara the best. Based on his canon, I can easily envision all the little depths and nuances that would make him a realistic person with flaws and strengths and a past that shaped him into what he is.

14. What character is the most difficult to portray?

Itachi. Goddamn. That sexy, mysterious bastard is so hard to write well - to give him a personality that endears the reader and allows him to have romantic interactions with his chosen partner, but at the same time retain the aloofness and hint of darkness that surrounds him in canon. It helps that now we all know he was mostly a big faker and not really evil, but he's not a saint either and  that dark edge still needs to be there, so in a way its almost harder to strike the right balance. I think I do a decent job of that, but of course there will always be people who think he should be more villain-like, or more hero-like. He's a complicated dude. I don't think even his creator entirely knows what's up with him.

15. Do you have any good future fics planned?

I do! For a long time now I've wanted to write an epic multichapter fic for my OTP - KakaSaku. I haven't up to this point for a couple of reasons. One, I felt I lacked the refinement and skill to do my favorite pairing justice. And two, I wanted to have a really great unique plot, because there are so many KakaSaku fics out there and most of them are following the same 2-3 basic premises. I finally have the story I want, and it's just waiting to be written once my current fic is finished.

Hey Cynchick,
I haven't really stalked you before but I am a BIG fan of your work over on FF. You literally turned me into a Deidara fangirl overnight! I used to hate him in the manga and anime with a fiery passion until I stumbled across your work. In regards to you mentioning a big KakaSaku project coming up can I just say : squeeeeeeee!
I can'r wait to read it, I know it will be AMAZING!

I am glad that Vespertine is getting so many reviews - especially since I have not been able to leave one for some time... I've finally figured out what I wanted to say. Not sure whether it's better to do so in a review on ff - or here, because this post is about writing. And it's writing/plot elements that I wanted to comment on and hoped to leave some useful constructive feedback.

My issue with Vespertine is that despite all its multiple strengths, for me - a canon-knowledgeable reader - the middle chapters lack consistent tension, mystery or discovery. And I understand that it's hard to do when we already know Itachi's history! But still, at every turn where you could have built more tension and glue us to the edge of the seats wondering what's next, you chose to resolve it almost immediately - essentially within the following chapter.

For example, you used the chakra bond between Itachi and Sakura to build a high comfort level - instead of them slowly and awkwardly learning to trust each other. And when Sakura goes to Tsunade... we find out that Tsunade already knows. True, there are some canon tension points remaining... but they also feel predictable: Madara will go down; and given that Sasuke now knows Itachi's background too, they most likely will reconcile.

And looking back at all of the 9 chapters so far, I can remember distinctly only one moment of real personal growth: when Itachi begins to realize that he could live his life for himself. I don't really see personal growth in Sakura - she learns more facts, but I don't see any change in her.

As the result, while Vespertine may have the best language of all your stories... it also feels very... level? peaceful? It's hard to find the right word. But to me, it lacks the deep gripping intensity of Vertigo or Perception. And I've spent weeks keeping it at the edge of my mind trying to understand why and summarize it in a way that might be useful for you. But perhaps, that more level effect is exactly what you were aiming for :)

Thanks a lot for all your writing!

I know you think Perception needs rewrites, but I have yet to see a fic that I love edited and reposted that was as good as the original. Yes, the fics might be technically better, but more times than naught I find the actually ambiance of a fic to be ruined by an author's overzealous rewrites. I'm not saying that your rewrite wouldn't be better, I'm just scared that it won't be. *whimpers*

Also, Itachi is IMPOSSIBLE to write.

Oh, I'm not going to rewrite it, I'm just going to edit little things that will make it read better. A sentence that could be arranged better, or a sentence that doesn't need to be there. That kind of thing. I don't have the time or desire to actually rewrite any of it.

Aw man, I forgot how much I liked Christmas Confessions, though I don't know if I ever reviewed it on ff :( But it's really just a great read if you're looking for something simple, happy and well written.. plus... OTP!

and have i mentioned how excited I am to read your upcoming story? I've been searching around (mostly using your rec list) and have found some pretty awesome stories but now I've read them all and am craving a well written and believable story for them!
Oh, and though I will always love Perception since it was one of the 1st truly good Naruto fanfictions i ever read, I'd agree that Vespertine shows a real improvement in the flow of your writing. It's got a very natural flow to it, like it's complicated but not cluttered which is just really refreshing. so Kudos to you!

A KakaSaku fic!

Ooh! Since I don't read ItaSaku or DeiSaku the only fic of yours I've read is Christmas Confessions, I think, but I loved it! AND, everyone talks about how great you are, and there is TONS of fanfic for your stories... including your own, and you're a great artist! SO ALL of these things behind said, it greatly excites me that you would be embarking on a long KakaSaku! Because then I will finally be able to taste this Cynchick fanfic that gets talked and talked and TALKED about!
